Résumé :
Myopathies are a heterogeneous group of rare diseases caused by genetic variants in more than 150 genes. While myopathies are rare in individuals, collectively they affect 1/3,500 people. Muscle degeneration is a hallmark of most myopathies; however, the impact of these diseases on the regenerative capacity of muscle stem cells is poorly investigated. Ongoing projects in the lab aim to comprehend the contribution of muscle stem cell defects to the pathogenesis of different myopathies. Moreover, we investigate new treatment targeting defective muscle stem cells to restore muscle regeneration and mitigate the progression of the disease, with a particular focus on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Biographie :
Dr Nicolas Dumont did his PhD at the Université Laval where he studied the regulatory network between inflammatory cells and skeletal muscles. He did his post-doctoral training at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, where he studied muscle stem cells function in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Dr Dumont became an assistant professor at the Université de Montréal in 2016. He established his lab at the CHU Sainte-Justine research center where he developed a research program focusing on identifying muscle stem cell defects in rare myopathies and investigating new therapeutic avenues targeting these cells. Dr Dumont is supported by a FRQS Junior-1 award; and his lab is funded by grants from the CIHR, NSERC, la Fondation du Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie, ThéCell, and Stem Cell Network.
